Coming to Terms with Picket’s Charge, Confederate Monuments, and Racism.

On  October 16,  please join Dr. Peter S. Carmichael, the Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies and Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College and Dr. Jill Titus  also of CWI for  a 90 minute  program  beginning at  4:30 at the Virginia monument on Confederate Avenue. We will walk just a few hundred yards over terrain that is  relatively flat and even.

We will open with a brief discussion of what happened on July 3 and how white Southerners have made meaning of  the  catastrophic losses  in the immediate wake of Pickett’s charge. Most of our discussion will center  on  Confederate commemorations and Southern monuments, and the role they have played in the silencing of controversial issues involving race and slavery.

We will look at the battle from new angles, consider marginalized perspectives that are often forgotten at Gettysburg, and discuss how the a battlefield  can  become a place of civic engagement  in which we can reflect upon the long history of  issues that we confront today.

We look forward to having a meaningful experience with you on October 16.
